FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

Boren Awards

 provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad.

Undergraduate Scholarship

  • Maximum award amounts
    • $8,000 for a summer program (special initiative for STEM students only; 8 weeks minimum)
    • $12,500 for a semester (12-24 weeks)
    • $25,000 for a full academic year (preferred)
  • Deadline: Late January

Graduate Fellowship

  • Up to $25,000 for overseas study
  • Maximum awards are determined by length of study
    • 12 weeks minimum
  • Deadline: Late January

Critical Language Scholarship

The (CLS) Program is a fully funded summer overseas language and cultural immersion program for American undergraduate and graduate students. With the goal of broadening the base of Americans studying and mastering critical languages and building relationships between the people of the United States and other countries, CLS provides opportunities to a diverse range of students from across the United States at every level of language learning.

DAAD-RISE

offers summer research internships in Germany for undergraduate students from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Students are matched with a host university or institute and doctoral student mentor according to their area of interest (biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, engineering, or a closely related field).  

  • Eligibility at a glance
    • Must have completed at least 2 years of degree program by the time of placement
  • Interns receive a monthly stipend to cover every day costs (benefits vary between internship, see specific job description for details)
  • About 300 scholarships are available each year

Fulbright Canada-Mitacs Globalink

offers high-performing U.S. undergraduates the opportunity to be part of a 10- to 12-week summer research internship between the months of May and August. Award recipients work under the supervision of Canadian university faculty members in a variety of academic disciplines, ranging from science, engineering and mathematics to the humanities and social sciences. 

Application deadline: Varies - Mid-Late September

  • U.S. students will come to Canada to undertake advanced research projects.
  • Projects will cover a broad cross-section of research topics including most academic disciplines.
  • Students will spend 10 to 12 weeks (May-August) in Canada on a research project in their area of interest.
  • Students will be placed at a Canadian university and undertake a supervised research project.
  • Students will be given the opportunity to take part in a program of professional training.
    These programs include project management, problem-solving, communication, and entrepreneurship.
  • Students may interact with companies of interest through tours or individual meetings.
  • Students will have extensive opportunities for cultural, social, and recreational experiences.

Participants in this program must:

  • be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at an accredited university in the United States;
  • be a United States citizen, and hold a valid U.S. passport;
  • have at least one semester remaining in their program of study as of Fall 2023;
  • have a competitive grade point average;
  • be available to spend between 10 to 12 weeks in Canada between May and August; and
  • apply by September 20, 2022.

Students who participate in this program will have:

  • access to the prestigious worldwide Fulbright network;
    access to some of Canada's top research facilities;
  • the opportunity to gain valuable international experience;
  • a rewarding experience combining academic research, professional skills, and personal growth; and,
  • a grant in the amount of CAD $7000.00.

Fulbright Summer Institutes

The are 3-6 week academic and cultural summer programs in the UK. Participants in these programs will get the opportunity to experience an exciting academic program at a highly regarded UK University; explore the culture, heritage, and history of the UK; and develop their academic ability by improving presentation, research, and communication skills.

Gilman Scholarship Program

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State鈥檚 Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the aims to diversify students who study and intern abroad as well as the countries and regions where they go by offering awards to U.S. undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints.

  • Eligibility at a glance
    • Receiving (or will receive) a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of their study abroad program or internship
  • : October and March
    • Students can study and intern abroad during spring, summer, fall, or academic year term
  • Award Benefits
    • Approximately $5,000 for fall and spring programs and $3,000 for summer programs
    • Critical Need Language Award
      • Applicants who are studying a critical need language while abroad in a country in which the language is predominantly spoken will automatically be considered
      • Total award of $8,000
