3. Create and Edit Closed Captioning with YouTube

3.1 Upload your video to YouTube and edit the automatic captions

  • Upload your video to YouTube.
    • Sign into YouTube at .
    • In the top right-hand corner, click CREATE and then select Upload video.

  • Select the file you would like to upload (For instructional videos, you may choose the Unlisted or Private under Privacy Settings to limit or prevent others from watching it on YouTube).
  • While signed in, go to Videos and click on the video.

  • Under More Options – Original video language, subtitles, and CC, set the video language as English (United States), and click on Save.



  • Within 2-24 hours, YouTube will automatically create captions for your video using machine-driven speech recognition (60-70 percent accurate on average). You may want to edit the automatic captions.
  • In , select Subtitles from the left column.

  • For the video subtitles label ending in "(Automatic)," click on the three dots on the right of Published (Edit on Classic Studio) under the Subtitles column to open the YouTube caption editor.

  • Select the Edit button at the top-right to play and edit the presented transcript as needed.

  • Once you are satisfied with your edits, select Save Changes at the top-right. Your changes will be saved and you will be returned to the list of published subtitles.

3.2 Download your edited captions

  • Select the published subtitles option that appears to the right.

  • Select Actions at the top-left and then select the .srt file option to download the new caption file to your computer.

3.3 Add the captions to your Mediasite presentation

  • Once you have downloaded the captions from YouTube, refer to 2.2 Upload Captions to Mediasite Presentations add the caption file to your Mediasite presentation.
