ARAB AND ISLAMIC STUDIES ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

A close up of an Arabic language book.

The Arab and Islamic Studies program engages students in the interdisciplinary study of Arab and Islamic societies, provides Arabic language training, and lays a foundation for careers and advanced study in a range of fields.

In the Arab and Islamic Studies program, you study with professors who are historians, theologians, political scientists and experts in language and literature. Your interdisciplinary study of complex histories and societies will develop your knowledge base, hone your research skills, deepen your cultural understanding, and prepare you to ask and to answer important questions about our world. The skills AIS students develop are essential both to professional careers and to a life of civic engagement. Among our alumni are Fulbright winners, a Rhodes scholar, researchers and activists, members of the military and nonprofit employees. Our students develop critical understandings of the world and the knowledge and writing skills to apply this in a variety of fields.

WHY ARAB AND ISLAMIC STUDIES?

Our students have won national scholarship awards, achieved admission to top law and graduate schools, and gone on to careers in the military, government, nonprofits and business.

Understanding the world well requires understanding different societies, and our major and minor provide solid training in Arabic language as well as Arab and Muslim societies and cultures. Whether you’re interested in history, politics, religion or culture, we have a range of engaging and relevant courses to offer, as well as experiences beyond the classroom.

Interested in honing your Arabic or experiencing life in the Middle East? We help students find rewarding and accessible study-abroad summer and semester-long experiences from Morocco to Oman and points in between.
