The Sociology and Criminology Department compliments its rigorous curriculum and research with events that highlight the cutting-edge studies of outside scholars and the independent research of our majors.
Fritz Nova Lecture
The Fritz Nova lecture, held annually during the fall semester, brings to campus distinguished social scientists in sociology, criminology, political science and economics. In addition to a public lecture, the speakers also give a colloquium for faculty and students on their research and pressing social issues. The 2019 speaker was Michael Emerson, PhD, who spoke about the intersection of race and religion.
Student Conferences
The Department of Sociology and Criminology is committed to providing students with opportunities to present their research at conferences with the support of faculty. Since 1981, the Mid-Atlantic Undergraduate Social Research Conference (MAUSRC) specifically encourages undergraduates to present their research from upper-level research methods and theory courses or senior seminar to their peers and faculty members from colleges and universities across the east coast. Our department has hosted this event numerous times in the past, most recently in 2018.
