CAREERS AND GEV ALUMNI

Why Study Geography and the Environment?

Graduates from programs in the Department of Geography and the Environment have independent research experience, the ability to think critically and solve problems, laboratory and field work experience, geospatial expertise, and the communication and writing skills to be highly successful in the rapidly expanding geospatial or environmental fields as well as in a wide variety of careers outside of these fields.

Career Preparation

All undergraduate majors complete a one-credit Professional Development course (GEV 2001) in their sophomore year, which focuses on helping students get the most out of their time in college, exploring summer research and internship opportunities, and developing essential professional development skills.

All undergraduate majors complete a one-semester Senior Project or two-semester Senior Thesis under the guidance of a faculty mentor or through an external internship. Graduate Thesis and Non-Thesis Capstone students likewise complete independent research projects. These experiences are invaluable for developing and demonstrating skills such as effective written and oral communication, quantitative and analytical abilities, and the ability to work independently. These are all professional development skills that will be key to success in any profession.

There is a growing need for geospatial expertise in many professions, and our graduates are proficient in both technical geospatial skills and in geospatial thinking.
