Latina trailblazer Mari Carmen Aponte β70 MA was honored in October 2021 for her accomplishments by the White House Fellows Foundation and Association with its highest distinction, the John Gardner Legacy and Leadership Award. A diplomat and attorney with a long list of firsts on her resume, Aponte in 1979, became the first Latina lawyer to serve as a White House Fellow, assisting the US secretary of Housing and Urban Development. And in 2010, she became the first Puerto Rican woman to hold the title of US Ambassador when she was appointed ambassador to El Salvador. Most recently, she was nominated by President Joe Biden to serve as the nationβs next ambassador to Panama.
