Dr. Moeness Amin Shares Expertise, CAC Resources with International Partners

In addition to hosting global experts and researchers in acoustics, signal processing, and radar imaging at its world-renowned laboratory facilities, Dr. Moeness Amin, Director of the Center for Advanced Communications, can also be found abroad, sharing resources and expertise from the CAC and building important partnerships that impact teaching and research for engineering students and faculty.

Over the summer, Dr. Amin visited three countries to share updates on research activities within the CAC, provide counsel to help shape international engineering education and research protocols, and serve as an external examiner of a Ph.D. thesis. He was also recognized for his ongoing collaboration with an important international partner.

Barcelona, Spain: In July, Dr. Amin visited the Centre Technological Center on Telecommunications of Catalunya (CTTC), where he presented recent research activities of the CAC, specifically in the area of radar systems, to staff, directors, and technical area coordinators from the CTTC. This visit plays an important role in the ongoing collaboration between both research centers, which has already yielded a signed Memorandum of Agreement.

Cairo, Egypt: Dr. Amin visited the Egyptian National Authority for Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Education (NAQAAE) in August to share with Professor Magdy Kassem, NAQAAE President and Chairman of the Board of Directors, his views on what is expected from higher education and research in engineering in terms of the graduates鈥 knowledge, technical competence, breadth, and professional attitudes. NAQAAE is the only legal authority in Egypt assigned to redesign instructional frameworks as a step forward for the Egypt Education Reform Project. As the accrediting body supporting more than 50,000 Egyptian educational institutes, NAQAAE screens for and documents best practices for higher education and research. In recognition of his participation in the program, Dr. Amin received a plaque of appreciation.

Darmstadt, Germany: Shortly after visiting NAQAAE, Dr. Amin traveled to the Darmstadt University of Technology to serve as an external examiner of the Ph.D. thesis submitted by graduate student Christian Debes. Dr. Amin served as now-Dr. Debes鈥 co-advisor for three years, worked closely with him on applying detection and classification theory to the area of radar imaging. Dr. Amin received a thank-you letter from Darmstadt University of Technology for his outstanding supervision which, in part, culminated in a thesis grade of Summa Cum Laude for Dr. Debes.

In addition to these visits, Dr. Amin also received a Certificate of Appreciation from Grenoble Institute of Technology GIPSA-lab in Grenoble, France in June 鈥淔or his admirable, longstanding and successful research collaboration with the GIPSA-lab/Department of Images-Signal.鈥 The CAC has a longstanding relationship with the Grenoble Institute of Technology. For example, Dr. Cornel Ioana, Associate Professor and researcher with GIPSA-lab laboratory visited the CAC in May to support his current research in signal processing methods as applied to natural phenomena. In addition, Grenoble Institute of Technology students Xavier Pons i Masbernat and Xavier Rivenq spent five months with the CAC this year to support their advanced degree work in electronics, electrical engineering, automation, and signal processing.
