Senior Civil Engineering major Kimberley Musey is a recipient of the 2014 Suzanne Axworthy Undergraduate Scholarship from . WTS鈥擶omen鈥檚 Transportation Seminar鈥攊s an international organization dedicated to building the future of transportation through the global advancement of women. The Suzanne Axworthy Scholarship is awarded to women pursuing undergraduate studies in transportation or a related field.
Kimberley is an undergraduate researcher for Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering Dr. Seri Park, an expert in the transportation field. Dr. Park says, 鈥淚 am so happy for Kimberley, as I myself was the recipient of a WTS scholarship when I was student.鈥 Together they are conducting research on improving the safety of horizontal curves through high friction surface treatments. Earlier this fall, Kimberley worked with fellow civil engineering seniors on a project sponsored by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission that involved the redesign of a corridor in Philadelphia. Kimberley adds, 鈥淭his spring, for my transportation engineering senior capstone project, I plan to focus on highway connectors.鈥
When asked about her post-graduation plans, Kimberley notes her interest in the design of structural and transportation facilities. 鈥淚 plan on earning an interdisciplinary master鈥檚 degree in structures and transportation, and hope to continue working with Dr. Park,鈥 she says. Kimberley鈥檚 long term goal is to 鈥済et involved with international construction.鈥
In 2001, WTS Philadelphia established the Suzanne Axworthy Scholarship to honor a woman who, for over 25 years, developed and advocated for public and specialized transportation throughout Philadelphia. The scholarship is competitive and based on the applicant's specific transportation goals, academic record and transportation-related activities or job skills. In addition to the Philadelphia region award, Kimberley鈥檚 nomination application will be submitted to WTS International to compete with recipients from all other chapters for the 2014 WTS International Sharon D. Banks Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship.
