On family history:  As the youngest of nine children raised in Southwest Philadelphia by a single mom and even more so older brothers and sisters, I learned the meaning of hard work at an early age. Being the baby in a big family gave me a really strong work ethic; I had to work for everything.

Education: A bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from UCLA, followed by a ÃÞ»¨ÌÇÖ±²¥ master’s degree in chemical engineering and a certificate in sustainable engineering. I also have my Professional Engineer’s license, became a Certified Municipal Engineer, pursued my architect license, and received LEED® (Leadership in Energy Efficient Design) accreditation.

Career milestones: I began my career with Texaco in the oil industry. That job led to a position with Remington & Vernick Engineers, a full-service engineering consulting firm in New Jersey. On January 1, 2017, I was named the first female partner of the firm.

Reflecting on her career: Some of my most challenging work was also the most rewarding. During a school construction project that required a level of project management that was new to my firm, I took on the challenge and learned to make quick, informed decisions while finding the most efficient solutions to keep the project on track. At the end of the 10-week deadline, I was able to watch students walk into their newly renovated school, and it felt great! My client even wrote a letter to my boss saying that the project would have failed without me. That experience taught me about myself and prepared me for future opportunities.

Inspiring the next generation: I like to share my passion with young, aspiring engineers. I teach seminars at local high schools, speak to the Engineering Girls’ Club and invite young women to shadow me on the job. I believe it’s important to demonstrate that it’s not all just math equations and science. It’s about running projects, interacting with clients, and learning in the field; you’re always seeking the best solution to a problem. It’s hard and rigorous work, but if that’s what you love, then it’s worth it!
