In the English for Everyday Life series of courses, you will explore topics of interest from everyday life while practicing and building English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.

Using a variety of authentic texts, including video excerpts and written texts, the courses focus mainly on broadening your vocabulary, improving your listening comprehension, and building conversational fluency.

Students of all English language levels are welcome. With each 7 week course a student will receive 1.75 Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Topics throughout the year include:

  • Understanding English Grammar

Talar Kaloustian

Talar Kaloustian, EdD

Dr. Kaloustian loves languages and she loves teaching. She received her doctoral degree in Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education from the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania. Over the course of fifteen years, Dr. Kaloustian has taught English as a Second Language to language learners around the world, in cities such as Beirut, Istanbul, Prague and Philadelphia, as well as undergraduate and graduate level courses in sociolinguistics, second language acquisition, and qualitative research. Her other interests include ESL curriculum development, student mentorship, academic advising, student orientation, program coordination, and teacher training.

In this course, students will explore topics related to North American culture, including food, music, traditions and more.

Government and Citizenship

Using a variety of authentic texts, including video excerpts and written texts, this course focuses on broadening students’ vocabulary, improving their listening comprehension, and building their conversational fluency. In this course, students will explore topics related to politics, including the different forms of governance, the US government system, and citizens’ rights.

Technology and Science

Using a variety of authentic texts, including video excerpts and written texts, this course focuses on broadening students’ vocabulary, improving their listening comprehension, and building their conversational fluency. In this course, students will explore topics related to technology, including the evolution of people’s relationship with technology, and the future of technology.

People and the Environment

Using a variety of authentic texts, including video excerpts and written texts, this course focuses on broadening students’ vocabulary, improving their listening comprehension, and building their conversational fluency. In this course, students will explore topics related to the environment, including climate change, pollution, and the role that humans have played in impacting the environment.

Current Events

Using a variety of authentic texts, including video excerpts and written texts, this course focuses on broadening students’ vocabulary, improving their listening comprehension, and building their conversational fluency. In this course, students will explore important local and global issues in the news today.

Sports and Outdoor Recreation

Using a variety of authentic texts, including video excerpts and written texts, this course focuses on broadening students’ vocabulary, improving their listening comprehension, and building their conversational fluency. In this course, students will explore topics related to North American sports and general outdoor recreational activities. Topics will include famous sports figures, popular sports teams, and growing trends in activities, such as hiking, biking, and skiing.
